There is nothing more enticing than the sight of a woman who is in complete control of the snowboard when zooming down the slope at a very high speed. This may sound very sexist but people often react to the combination of snowboarding and women with surprise and then fear. The first thing that people think of when they hear about a woman who is good at snowboarding is how risky the sport can be and how it can result in devastating injuries.

The funny thing is that the same individual will speak of how exciting the sport is and how fast it can be when the snowboarder in question happens to be a male. Well, there is no need to react to the concept of women in snowboarding as if somebody has set up a temporary gunpowder manufacturing unit in the midst of a Crown Oil UK refinery. A quick search on the Internet is enough to show that snowboarding has been popular amongst women for quite some time now.

What is more, there are some women who are as good as the best male counterparts in the sport. What makes their achievement even more special is that they have to tackle not just the physical requirements of the sport but also the mental and social obligations involved. Skiing is as popular as ever this season. Already hundreds of chalets have been block booked and many are no longer taking any bookings. France and Italian resorts all across the Alps in have reported an upswing in booking rather then a downturn which, considering the current economic climate is positive news. However take a closer look at the pricing structure that many tour operators have instigated and it is easier to understand why there has been an upswing in bookings.

Operators and resorts have had to adjust to the harsh economic winter just as much as everyone else. As a result it is now possible for even the most stringent of budgets to include a reasonable ski holiday in 2012. However one area travellers still need to be cautious with is when buying the necessary equipment required for the slopes.

Essentials

Never underestimate the weather in the mountains. Goggles, jackets, gloves, pants and hats are as important as the skis you’ll be using. Staying warm and safe are the two targets every skier needs to fulfil if they are to enjoy themselves. So the question remains; where to get all this stuff for a price that won’t bankrupt you?

There are many places to go to shop these days, but it is the online market that has seriously emerged to rival the high street. A survey conducted in 2010 indicated that nearly 50% of all shopping is done online in the UK. Whilst the full year results of 2011 are yet to be published, it is safe to assume that the figure will be over the 50% mark. Ski jackets can be expensive, so it behoves one to be clever when selecting the right one. Shopping for men’s ski jackets has traditionally been a chore for many; finding the right size, fit, colour and price causes many men to hold their hands up in the air and admit defeat when on the high street. The online world is much more focused.

It may be cold and icy on the slopes but one thing that is certainly not frosty is the snow bunny babes that grace it. Not only are these girls top of their game in snow sports, they enviably have the looks to create a total package, the Anna Kournikova’s of the slopes! Read on for a low down on the top five snow babes that will definitely melt the ice!

First up is snowboarder Torah Bright (pictured above) who is 24 year old and from New South Wales, Australia. With her long blonde hair and beautiful smile Torah is a firm hit with the guys, furthermore her looks and sporting achievements have also landed her a lucrative sponsorship deal with the brand Roxy.

Another world class snowboarder with dazzling looks is 26 year old Lindsey Jacobelis hailing from Vermont. Her looks have gained her a number of high profile advertisement campaigns which include a commercial for international brand Visa.

Vermont have also produced another athlete who has hit headlines for her looks as well as snowboarding prowess, in the form of 24 year old Hannah Teter. You won’t find this girl sat at home on her days off playing with her backgammon set, Teter works hard raising awareness for breast cancer as well as World Vision and Children International.

Ellery Hollingsworth with her ‘girl next door'looks, is another popular snow bunny at the tender age of just 20 years old. Her looks have helped her to gain sponsorship deals with brands such as Burton, Nike and Gatorade.

Lastly and arguably the finest of all the snow bunny babes is 30 year old Gretchen Bleiler an American professional halfpipe snowboarder from Ohio. Gretchen posed for the 2004 edition of FHM as well as appearing in numberous adverts and commercials during her professional life. The bronzed and blonde haired beauty Gretchen Bleiler (pictured below) is a true snow bunny babe.

Two questions will dominate the minds of most skiers this year and next. The first is ‘will there be enough snow?’ That is relatively easier to answer then the second question; ‘can I afford to go?’ Weather reports for weeks in advance are now available from most resorts allowing skiers to assess whether or not to visit at certain times. However for most of us operating on increasingly restricted budgets it isn’t the weather that is foremost on our mind.

There are many things to consider in the 2011/2012 ski season, price appearing at the top of most people’s lists. Due to the stagnant economic climate exchange rates have been badly affected – particularly in Europe. Money isn’t going as far as before and as a result, skiers from all economic backgrounds are counting the pennies a lot more then they were last year. One element that has taken a hit includes the amount skiers are willing to pay for insurance. Winter ski travel insurance is a must have for all skiers and boarders heading to the slopes, but owing to the economic downturn the premiums people are willing to pay have decreased. Fortunately many of the tour operators and insurance companies have recognised the challenges and have acted accordingly.

A lot of operators still suffering from three seasons of tough conditions both financially and practically (owing to bad weather), have been forced to re-examine their priorities. It has resulted in some companies going out of business entirely. However the remaining companies have boxed clever and are offering holidays and breaks at reduced rates. Insurance companies have followed suit realising that if skiers are unable to afford holidays at the old rates, then they are hardly likely to pay higher rates for getting insured. The result of these changes has opened up a whole series of budget breaks available for all levels of skier. You just have to be a little more careful where you look.

All the operators have had their backs against the wall in the past year and many are still determined to offer holidays and breaks at last year’s rates. Those that do are attempting to woo customers with all sorts of ‘added value’ extras to the ticket price. Free lift passes; two-for-one ski and board rentals, free child travel, hotel vouchers and free lunches are all cropping up as extras when booking a trip. Whilst these extra options are welcome, they do not negate the fact that the trip prices are still high for a world unable to spend what it used to.

The key to planning your ski trip this year is to look around a lot more before booking. Despite the number of companies and operators dropping, there will still be many last minute bargains to be had both in terms of insurance and travel.

Snow’s Up In Italy

Winter is on its way again in Europe which mean it’s time to dust off those ski boots and get ready for another season of great slopes and sporting events. With the economic challenge that many people around the world are facing, ski holidays may be just the thing to help break up the gloom. Italy has become an increasingly popular destination for both skiers and snowboarders in the past several years and there are many resorts to choose from.

History

Italy first hosted the Winter Olympics back in 1956. The games returned to the country in 2006 and as a direct result many of the facilities have been improved. It has made Italy one of Europe’s better ski destinations and visitors can expect both cross country and downhill runs of high quality.

Skiing In Italy

The peak of Monte Bianco is at an elevation of 4,810 metres and is located right between France and Italy on the border. This mountain has an alpine range that provides a crisp snow-covered area with resorts dotted all around the Acosta Valley in Italy. Some of the most famous areas for skiing now lay in Italy which has become renowned for having the best slopes in Europe. Areas that are the most famous include the Dolomites (Dolomites-Super-Ski) and the Milky Way (Via Lattea) in West Piedmont. Skiers can expect hundreds of kilometres of pistes all linked together by efficient lift systems.

The best reviewed resorts mostly consist of Cervinia, Courmayeur, La Thuile in Valie d’Acosta, Sestriere, Sauze d’Oulx and Bardonecchia west of Turin. When the Olympics took place in 2006 these resorts benefitted from many of the improvements required by the international ruling committee for the games. There are other popular resorts though including Livigno, Madonna di Campiglio and the now very fashionable (some might say ‘pretentious’) Cortina d’Ampezzo. The Cortina is one of the more upmarket resorts and has been known to attract a lot of show offs and rich tourists looking to flash their money around to anyone willing to look. As such it is not really recommended as the best place to go if money is tight.

Skiing on a budget

Not all of the resorts mentioned above are going to be to everyone’s taste particularly if budgets are stretched. Do not let that put you off booking a trip though as there are many offers already available on the internet for the 2011-2012 season. Short breaks, tailored trips and some incredible bargains can be found especially now as many operators are aware of the financial constraints.
